Field Trips: Our van allows us to capitalize on the incredible variety of rich learning experiences that await in our Hudson River Valley. As common sense would presume, regular field trips have a wonderful effect on the esprit de corps, and academics flow much more smoothly because they whet appetites for learning. We stretch our legs on the Appalachian Trail, canoe with Park Rangers in Constitution Marsh, explore the Met and Museum of Natural History, and uncover hosts of other fascinating places to see and people to meet. Parents are always welcome to enrich our experiences on these days, as well as join us on our annual overnight(s).
We love PE!: Our Project Adventure teacher has 20 years experience climbing. He guided the oldest class in building a 16’ tall climbing wall, and his Ropes Course is always a big hit. (This covers building one and two line bridges, “prusikking” {climbing vertical ropes}, and other aspects of climbing.) He will be adding a professional zip line soon! (Students are always secured by appropriate safety devices.) We also enjoy relaxed games of kickball, basketball, whiffleball, ping-pong, etc., on our campus. We hit the gym to swim, play racquetball and “wallball” (our homespun game played on a racquetball court), row and fish in our boats, explore trails, and keep fresh air and blood flowing in a variety of other fun ways.
Art is a visual language. We emphasize the process - an opportunity for children to explore their emotions - rather than the product. A rich variety of paints, clay, and other materials are available. The teacher offers ideas and techniques, and each child makes the project their own. Children are encouraged to delve deeper and verbalize their feelings about their creations. Artists ourselves, my wife and I are excited as the children to fire our dreams in our kiln!
Music & Drama: Group music lessons are provided weekly, some years the students get a band together; other years individuals strum, hum, and drum more sporadically. Private lessons are available at school. Everyone is invited to participate in weekly drama/improv/movement classes, and the kids may add a stage to the rec room next year.
Other Enrichment: We provide the space, act as a networking service, and manage special teachers such as dance, gymnastics, karate, etc. as interest, time, and space allow.
